A Deputy Controller (Administration) of the Department of Immigration and Emigration has been arrested by the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged issuance of a fraudulent passport. Police said the arrest was made on Monday (6) following an investigation ordered in relation to a case currently being heard before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court involving the preparation of a forged foreign passport. Investigators allege that the passport application contained the photograph of an alleged member of an organised criminal gang who had been deported from Chennai, India, but was submitted using the biometric data of another individual. According to police, the suspect is accused of aiding and facilitating the issuance of the passport by accepting the application without carrying out the required verification procedures. The arrested official is a 51-year-old resident of the Matara area. The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau is conducting further investigations. (Newswire)
