Sri Lanka has welcomed over 1.5 million tourists through late August this year, with Indian visitors leading arrivals across all major source markets.
Sri Lanka's tourism sector has achieved a significant milestone, with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority reporting 1,517,296 tourist arrivals between January 1 and August 27, 2026. The figure demonstrates sustained momentum in the country's travel and hospitality industry as it continues to recover and expand its international visitor base.
Indian tourists have emerged as the dominant source of arrivals, both on a monthly and year-to-date basis. During August alone, 41,781 visitors from India arrived, followed by the United Kingdom with 18,197 and China with 11,368 visitors. Cumulatively, India has contributed 380,011 tourists so far this year, significantly outpacing the United Kingdom's 148,598 arrivals and China's 99,875 visitors.
The monthly distribution of arrivals shows variation throughout the year. February recorded the peak tourism period with 279,328 arrivals, while the August 1-27 period accounted for 173,878 visitors. These patterns suggest seasonal fluctuations in tourist preferences, with the early monsoon months attracting higher numbers of international travelers to the island nation.
The strong performance across the first eight months of the year indicates positive prospects for Sri Lanka's tourism economy, as the country continues to position itself as a competitive destination in the South Asian and broader international travel markets.
