The Trump administration has announced restrictions on importing new foreign-made humanoid and advanced robotic devices, citing national security concerns amid intensifying US-China technological competition.
The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it would prohibit the importation of new humanoid and four-legged robotic devices produced outside the United States, along with certain power inverters used in data centres and solar installations. Officials characterised these restrictions as necessary protective measures against what they described as threats to American national security and economic interests.
The Federal Communications Commission, which oversees the ban, added these items to its Covered List of goods and services deemed to pose security risks. The restrictions specifically target advanced robotic systems and power inverters that have not previously received FCC authorisation, while allowing the continued sale of existing models that had already been cleared. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated the agency was working to "secure America's critical supply chains."
US authorities expressed concern that foreign-manufactured inverters could potentially be disabled by overseas companies, facilitating data theft, remote access, or surveillance operations by foreign governments. Similarly, the administration warned that robots produced abroad could be exploited by "malign actors" for surveillance purposes or to support foreign intelligence activities.
The move reflects broader US efforts to limit Chinese technological influence, following previous actions including steep tariffs on electric vehicles and restrictions on semiconductor exports. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also indicated that Chinese artificial intelligence companies may face sanctions over allegations of intellectual property theft. China has countered these characterisations, stating that its AI development results from "its own dedication and effort as well as international cooperation." The BBC contacted Chinese manufacturers and government representatives for comment.
