Hostilities between the United States and Iran resumed on Monday following Iranian missile attacks on two U.S. air bases in Jordan. The strikes came in response to a Sunday U.S. military operation targeting Iranian positions on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump stated through Fox News that there "will be a response" and that American air defenses had successfully intercepted all Iranian missiles that posed a threat.
The U.S. Central Command described Sunday's action as a "limited, precise" strike against Iranian Revolutionary Guards forces preparing to lay sea mines in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which handles approximately one-fifth of global crude oil shipments. According to reports, three people were killed in that operation. In response, Iran's military claimed to have also struck the Al Minhad air base in the United Arab Emirates, though the UAE's defense ministry denied the attack occurred, instead reporting that its air force engaged a drone over its territorial waters.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent characterized Iran's military actions as a sign of economic desperation, attributing the renewed hostilities to the impact of American secondary sanctions targeting Iranian banks and business partners. Bessent suggested additional sanctions would be unveiled weekly. However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian adopted a more conciliatory approach, telling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Iran still sought a negotiated settlement, stating that "continuing the war is in no one's interest."
A senior Iranian official described the recent exchanges as a "limited and contained confrontation" but warned that Tehran would respond severely if attacked again. Meanwhile, Trump posted an AI-generated video clip on his Truth Social platform depicting Iran's Kharg Island being destroyed, though U.S. officials confirmed no such attack occurred. An Iranian official dismissed the post as "laughable."
