Two earthquakes struck Xinghai county in Qinghai province, northwestern China, on Tuesday morning, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre. The first tremor, measuring magnitude 5.7, occurred at 11:16 a.m. local time. The second earthquake followed just 18 minutes later with a slightly higher magnitude of 5.8.
Both seismic events originated at a depth of 10 kilometers and were centered in the same area, approximately 244 kilometers away from Xining, the provincial capital. The shallow focal depth of the earthquakes suggests they could have been felt across a significant radius in the region, though reports on damage or casualties have not yet been detailed.
