Two firefighters have died in Crete as intense wildfires sweep through southern Europe, with Spain facing its largest recorded wildfire in history and multiple countries grappling with extreme heat and dangerous fire conditions.

A pair of firefighters have lost their lives while battling a major wildfire in the Rethymno area of Crete, becoming trapped as gale-force winds intensified the flames across the Greek island. The incident marks a tragic toll in an escalating wildfire crisis affecting multiple countries across southern Europe, where unusually high temperatures and strong winds are creating dangerous conditions for emergency responders and residents alike.

Spain is confronting unprecedented challenges, with a massive wildfire near Madrid now ranking as the largest recorded in the country's history. The Burgohondo fire in Ávila province has consumed more than 43,000 hectares of land, with authorities warning that the next 12 hours remain critical. Firefighting operations have established a perimeter of 180 kilometres, though officials expressed concern about potential re-ignition due to rising temperatures and lower humidity levels. Across Spain this year, wildfires have burned over 207,000 hectares in total. While thousands of residents have been allowed to return to their homes, local officials describe the recovery as an arduous process, with many having lost homes and livelihoods.

The crisis extends beyond Spain's borders. In Crete, multiple fires have broken out on islands including Paros and Lesbos, while wildfires also threaten southern Turkey and south-west France. In the Gironde region of France, authorities have deployed special protective measures around defence and aerospace facilities amid warnings of temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius. Portugal's north-eastern district of Vila Real is also experiencing active fire fronts. Beyond immediate emergency response, climate scientists link the intensifying wildfire season to broader climate change patterns, noting that Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average.
