Police have arrested two individuals, including a child's mother, following the discovery of a 4-year-old girl abandoned in an isolated area in Wattegama.
Authorities have taken into custody a man and woman in connection with the abandonment of a young child in the Wattegama district. The female suspect has been identified as the mother of the 4-year-old girl. Both individuals were arrested by officers from the Hali-Ela Police on Thursday, following an investigation that began after a tip-off was received through the police emergency hotline.
The child was discovered abandoned along the Wattegama–Yatirawana Road in an isolated location on Thursday morning. Police officials stated that the girl had apparently been left at the scene at approximately 7:00 a.m. by individuals who arrived in a three-wheeler vehicle. Officers from the Wattegama Police found the child and took her into protective custody.
During their investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage to identify and track the three-wheeler believed to have transported the child to the location. The surveillance evidence assisted investigators in establishing a connection to the suspects and led to the arrests. Both individuals now face allegations related to the assault and abandonment of the child.
