Sri Lanka's Cabinet has authorized the procurement of 2.28 million metric tons of coal for the Lakvijaya Power Plant at Norochcholai for 2026/2027, selecting two international suppliers through a competitive bidding process.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a coal procurement plan for the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant during its meeting on March 30, 2026. The decision authorizes the purchase of 2.28 million metric tons of coal to cover the power station's requirements for the 2026/2027 period, with a margin of approximately 10 percent variance allowed.
Two suppliers have been selected following an international competitive bidding process that received nine bids. The National Procurement Commission and the High-Level Standing Procurement Committee evaluated the proposals before making their recommendations to the Cabinet. The selection of two providers is intended to mitigate supply disruption risks and ensure consistent fuel availability for the facility.
Aditya Birla Global Trading Singapore Pte. Ltd. has been awarded 70 percent of the contract, corresponding to 1.596 million metric tons, while Mohit Minerals Limited of India will supply the remaining 30 percent, equaling 684,000 metric tons. Both companies will deliver coal on a per-shipment basis according to government sources.
Official statements indicate the procurement arrangement is designed to maintain uninterrupted power generation at the facility while strengthening the nation's overall energy security during the specified period.
