Police have apprehended two suspects in connection with animal cruelty after the Animal Welfare Coalition Sri Lanka filed a complaint regarding a video that circulated on social media.

Two individuals aged 18 and 19 have been arrested by Talatu Oya Police in relation to the abuse of a cat documented in a video that recently spread across social media platforms. The arrests followed a formal complaint lodged by the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) Sri Lanka, with both suspects taken into custody in the Athulgama area shortly after the complaint was registered. According to police, the suspects are residents of the same locality.

The incident captured in the video occurred approximately one month prior to the arrests, according to statements provided by the suspects. The case has prompted legal action under multiple provisions, with police indicating that charges will be brought under Section 411 of the Penal Code, Section 63(a) of the Police Ordinance, and applicable animal cruelty legislation.

The two suspects are scheduled to appear before the Kandy Magistrate's Court to face the charges. Talatu Oya Police confirmed that investigations into the matter are continuing as authorities work to establish additional details surrounding the incident.
