The United States military has begun striking Iranian targets in response to an attempted attack on American troops in the Middle East, marking an escalation in a conflict that has persisted for five months despite initial predictions of a brief duration.

The US military initiated what it described as a substantial response to Iranian aggression on Wednesday, following an attack by Iran on American bases in Jordan and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day. According to US Central Command, the strikes represent a direct retaliation to the Iranian offensive. President Trump stated beforehand that the US would respond forcefully, telling reporters that American forces would "be hitting them very hard."

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack, stating it had targeted a US air base and command centre in Jordan in response to American military actions. The IRGC also reported that its naval forces had struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting the vessels had disregarded warnings and travelled through what it characterized as an unsafe route.

This latest escalation comes after joint US-Saudi strikes were announced on Tuesday against Iranian proxies in Iraq, marking the first publicly confirmed coordinated military action between the two nations. Iraq's paramilitary Popular Mobilisation Forces reported at least 20 members killed in these strikes, while Iraq's presidency condemned the bombing as a violation of national sovereignty. Trump, however, stated the strikes had been coordinated with the Iraqi government.

The renewed hostilities follow several days of relative calm when both sides had halted operations as diplomatic discussions reportedly resumed. Trump characterized these talks as "very friendly negotiations," though Tehran denied such discussions were occurring. The overall conflict has now extended five months, contradicting Trump's February assertion that military operations would conclude within weeks, with Saudi Arabia reportedly seeking de-escalation efforts.
