The United States military has attacked a Panama-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, claiming it was attempting to deliver goods to Iranian ports in violation of an American blockade.
The United States military conducted a strike against the Vela Nova, a cargo vessel flying a Panamanian flag, on Tuesday in the Gulf of Oman. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which manages military operations in the Middle East, a Navy helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles at the ship, targeting its engine room and disabling its steering mechanisms.
CENTCOM stated that the vessel had attempted to breach the American blockade of Iranian ports and that the crew had ignored multiple warnings issued by US forces prior to the attack. The military authority did not provide information regarding whether any crew members sustained injuries in the incident.
The attack represents a resumption of military action between the United States and Iran following a period of relative restraint. A significant escalation occurred in July, which prompted the US and Iran to establish a memorandum of understanding in June. However, that agreement appears to have broken down, leading to renewed hostilities that had largely paused over the previous weeks.
According to CENTCOM, the blockade operations have been extensive, with American forces having disabled 55 commercial vessels throughout the enforcement of the Iran port blockade. Additionally, US personnel have disabled three vessels deemed non-compliant and boarded two others as part of these enforcement efforts.
