United States and Saudi Arabian warplanes conducted coordinated military operations against Iranian-aligned militant groups in Iraq, responding to recent drone attacks on American and Saudi targets.
The US military carried out joint strikes with Saudi Arabian forces on Tuesday targeting what it identified as Iran-backed militant organizations operating in Iraq. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operations were directed against "Iran-aligned terrorists that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure."
The strikes followed a series of drone attacks launched by these groups in recent days, with CENTCOM indicating that more than two dozen such incidents had occurred prior to the military response. The US military characterized the targeted groups as operating under direction from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The joint operation represents a coordinated effort between Washington and Riyadh to counter what both nations view as Iranian-backed militant threats in the region. The strikes targeted both the militant organizations themselves and the military capabilities they possessed that posed a threat to American personnel and Saudi energy facilities.
