A retired engineer has lost over Rs 9 million in a fraudulent online investment scheme that operated through the social media platform WhatsApp. According to the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Unit, the victim had worked in the public and private sectors of the country for over 40 years. She owned a house in a popular residential complex and had over Rs 10 million in bank deposits. Despite having a good understanding of modern technological tools such as online banking and transportation apps, she was caught in a well-planned trap of fraudsters posing as investment advisors. The Computer Emergency Response Unit said that the financial scam began through a social media website that claimed that the money invested would double every three months. The woman lost a large sum of money today, believing that she would get high returns by investing her money. The total investment she made in several installments is said to be around Rs 10 million. It is said that a detailed investigation is underway by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the police have been frequently warning the public about social media scams, and the public has been advised to be cautious in this regard.
