A digital witness room with facilities where children affected by violence can give evidence safely was opened at the Kandy High Court yesterday (17) to initiate a systematic process for the service for children affected by violence and provide safe evidence to children affected by violence. The objective of this systematic process is to provide prompt and child-friendly cooperation from the time an incident is reported to the police for assistance or other agencies until it is referred to the mechanism for the continued protection of children who have faced violence.
With these facilities, children who have been affected are given the opportunity to give evidence from a separate room in the court premises. Thus, the children are provided with the protection of not having to meet the perpetrators directly, and the trauma faced by the children is reduced. The introduction of this service for children affected by violence and the reduction of violence against children is one of the commitments made by Sri Lanka at the 2024 Bogota Conference. The Ministry of Justice and National Integration, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, UNICEF and the European Union have been supported by the Law Enforcement Assistance Project (JURE). The Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, addressed the launching ceremony of the process of regularizing the service for children affected by violence through video technology.
