News 26 February 2025 Implementation of an integrated 'Praja Shakti' program with multi-faceted approaches for poverty alleviation News 26 February 2025 The Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister of Health and Media, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced that an integrated 'Praja Shakti' program with multi-faceted approaches for poverty alleviation will be implemented. The Minister stated this during a meeting with journalists announcing the cabinet decisions held at the Department of Government Information yesterday (25). The Minister, who continued his comments; Currently, one in six people in the total population of Sri Lanka is living in multi-dimensional poverty, and 95.3% of this population lives in rural and plantation areas. It can be seen from the comments that no party is satisfied with the final results of the poverty alleviation programs implemented in Sri Lanka so far. Over the past several decades, the number of beneficiaries who have been provided relief through poverty alleviation welfare programs and the funds spent on it have gradually increased. It increased from 1.10 million beneficiaries in 2000 to 1.57 million beneficiaries in 2010. It is expected to increase to 1.79 million beneficiaries in 2024. Continuing this situation will have adverse effects on the country's economy and production process. Therefore, a systematic and planned program needs to be implemented gradually to include only vulnerable groups in the formal social security program and to transform others into active participants in the economic process. Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Social Empowerment to implement the 'Praja Shakti' program as an integrated program with multi-pronged approaches to enable the success of the vision of 'Prosperous Nation - Prosperous Life' in line with the new government's policy, Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified.
