The mayor has been removed from office due to corruption, fraud and abuse of power in the Vavuniya Municipal Council. C. Premadas, an independent committee member of the Municipal Council, has questioned whether he is ready for a public debate on this. Premadas made this statement in a media statement issued on Saturday (27) regarding the removal of Vavuniya Municipal Council Mayor Su. Kandeepan. He further stated in the statement, In the last local government elections, the people of Vavuniya voted and elected their representatives amidst high expectations. However, as far as the Vavuniya Municipal Council is concerned, the public welfare programs were not fully implemented with the approval of the council. Many arbitrary actions and abuses of power took place under the leadership of the mayor. There were irregularities, corruption and financial frauds that affected the people and wasted council funds. We also have evidence for this. Following a complaint made to the Local Government Commissioner regarding the said irregularities and corruption, a committee consisting of the Local Government Commissioner, engineers and technical officers was formed and an investigation was conducted. Based on the report, the Northern Provincial Governor had directed an investigation to be conducted under the leadership of a retired judge. Accordingly, the investigations conducted confirmed that corruption had taken place. Following this, the Northern Provincial Governor has removed the Mayor of the Vavuniya Municipal Council from his post through a special gazette notification. This is a step taken regarding the allegations of corruption. We welcome it. No one should be allowed to embezzle public money. Today, many social media activists and some party politicians are expressing various opinions regarding the removal of the Mayor of the Vavuniya Municipal Council and are also criticizing the Governor. This is wrong. I would like to ask them a question. There is complete evidence regarding the corruption and abuse of power that took place in the Vavuniya Municipal Council. I question whether the social activists, party leaders, and political figures who deny that it does not exist are ready to come for a public debate. I ask whether the former mayor of the city can also come for a public debate and prove that the allegations against him are false. Therefore, a government for the people should be formed in the Vavuniya Municipal Council. The people should understand that. It states that the corrupt should not be allowed to go behind and ruin the city.
