During a raid conducted by health inspectors in Vavuniya, 580 liters of sugarcane prepared for sale were seized from a house and one person has been arrested, the health inspectors said.
A house in the 8th ward, Urmila Kottam area, Veppangulam, Vavuniya, under the advice of Vavuniya Regional Health Officer Dr. Surendran, under the guidance of Senior Public Health Inspector Mejeya, led by Neulkulam Public Health Inspector M. Anran, Poovarasankulam Public Health Inspector Diluksan, Koomankulam Public Health Inspector Pavindran, and Sastri Koozankulam Public Health Inspector Dwaragan, with the assistance of the police, was raided on Friday night (26).
During this, 580 liters of sugarcane, including 7 40-liter containers filled with sugarcane and 580 liters of sugarcane brewed in barrels, were found in the house. Empty bottles and honey jars used to fill them were also found and recovered by the public health inspectors.
Meanwhile, the people who had distilled and sold the sugarcane in the house in question fled, and a woman, the owner of the house, was arrested. The health inspectors further stated that the items will be handed over to the court after further investigations and that the arrested person will be produced before the court.
Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that this is the first time that such a large amount of sugarcane has been seized in Vavuniya.
