A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Semnan in Iran's north-central province on Friday evening. The epicenter was 36 kilometers (22.4 miles) from Semnan and 17 kilometers (10.6 miles) from Sorkeh, the Iranian news agency reported. The quake killed five people and injured more than 100 in northwestern Iran, according to Iranian state media. Iran is located in a region prone to earthquakes, which have caused a number of tremors in recent years. The most devastating earthquake in the country's recent history occurred in 2013, when at least 34,000 people died in the city of Bam in southeastern Kerman province.
