The Sri Lanka Bar Association has officially announced that it did not appear or represent the lawyer Rahitha Rajapaksa, who has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The case was taken up for hearing at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.
At the same time, the association has issued a special statement, stating that the reports published by some media outlets that the Sri Lanka Bar Association had filed an information regarding the matter are completely false.
The Sri Lanka Bar Association has pointed out that the responsibility and role of the association in such a legal action involving one of its members is very limited. In such a situation, the only steps taken were to observe the court proceedings in this regard and report the information required for further institutional actions to the association.
It is also stated that their association does not make any other direct intervention other than this.
Furthermore, no lawyer was given permission by its executive committee to represent the Bar Association and submit information to the court during the trial of this case. The association stated that no authority was given to arrest or to do so. The statement further clarified that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka has not taken any decision to appear on behalf of the arrested lawyer.
It is noteworthy that lawyer Rahitha Rajapaksa, son of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa, has been arrested and remanded in custody on charges of illegally trying to protect a member of an underworld group.
