The Theldeniya Police had initiated investigations into the incident where a 33-year-old woman from Weligama was found dead in a car near Theldeniya Hospital on June 17. Since the incident was believed to have taken place in the area under the Nuwara Eliya Police Division, further investigations were handed over to the Nuwara Eliya Police. A suspect, known as the woman’s boyfriend, was arrested in Jaffna on June 24 by the Central Anti-Corruption Unit. His wife was also arrested with him. The arrested suspect is 43 years old, while the suspect is 35 years old and hails from the Pallekele area. The court has also allowed the 3-year-old boy who was with the couple to stay with his mother. During further investigations, it was revealed that the suspect has already been charged with several charges. Several financial fraud cases are pending in the Magistrates' Courts, particularly in Gampaha, Pudukada, Tissamaharama, Kaduwela and Horana. Some of them are as follows: • A case regarding the illegal acquisition of Rs. 11,873,000 and a car on the pretext of getting married is pending in the Gampaha Magistrate's Court. • A case regarding the fraud of Rs. 1,721,000 on the pretext of getting married is pending in the Pudukada Magistrate's Court No. 05. • A case regarding the fraud of Rs. 1,376,000 on the pretext of getting married is pending in the Pudukada Magistrate's Court No. 05. • A case regarding the fraud of Rs. 2,200,000 on the pretext of importing a vehicle from abroad is pending in the Tissamaharama Magistrate's Court. • The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed 04 cases against the suspect in the Attanagalla, Homagama and Kaduwela Magistrate's Courts and investigations are underway. • A case is pending in the Attanagalla Magistrate's Court regarding the fraud of Rs. 4,200,000 on the pretext of helping to travel abroad. The suspect, who was arrested in connection with the death of the victim, was handed over to the Nuwara Eliya Police Station for further investigation on Wednesday night. They were produced before the Nuwara Eliya District Court on Thursday (25) at 3.30 pm. Nuwara Eliya District Court Magistrate Budhika Dharmadasa granted permission to the police to detain the two for 48 hours for questioning.
