Four suspects have been arrested with a large quantity of drugs that were illegally imported into the country near the Pittipana Fish Import Port (Lellama) area under the Tungalpitiya Police Division. During a special raid conducted based on a tip-off received by officers of the Negombo District Criminal Investigation Bureau, approximately 48.3 million rupees worth of drugs that were being transported in a lorry were seized. Legal Action Initial investigations have revealed that the drugs were illegally brought into the country by sea without the appropriate permits and without any quality checks. Two sailors along with two boats suspected of being used to smuggle this batch of drugs by sea have been arrested by the authorities and handed over to the Tungalpitiya Police Station for further legal action. The suspects arrested in connection with the incident are between the ages of 31 and 49, and are from the Negombo and Maskeliya areas, the police said. Steps have been taken to produce the arrested suspects before the Magistrate's Court yesterday (25), and the Tungalpitiya Police are actively conducting further investigations in this regard.
