A high-level meeting of the Clean Sri Lanka Presidential Task Force has outlined plans to expand waste management programs across the country and develop selected cities as environmental models.
The Clean Sri Lanka Presidential Task Force, headed by Secretary to the President Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, convened at the Presidential Secretariat on August 12 to assess progress and chart next steps for the national cleanliness initiative. The session centered on advancing a new waste management scheme being implemented through local government bodies throughout Sri Lanka.
Task Force members discussed establishing a dedicated Project Management Unit within the Presidential Secretariat to manage and track the rollout of initiatives island-wide. The unit is intended to ensure coordinated execution across multiple agencies and timeframes.
The meeting also examined efforts to designate certain urban centers as model cities for environmental improvement. Priority areas for these pilot projects include waste management systems, beautification programs, canal restoration, sewerage upgrades, and public park rehabilitation. The Colombo Municipal Council area features prominently in this component of the initiative.
Looking ahead, task force members emphasized the need to integrate the social and ethical dimensions of the Clean Sri Lanka program more centrally into planning for next year, alongside existing environmental objectives. Officials stressed that a structured Project Management Unit would be essential to oversee the expanding scope of planned interventions.
