The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has restored water distribution to most areas in Colombo and Gampaha after conducting quality tests on water from the Kelani Ganga intakes, though some localities may experience continued delays.
Water supply has returned to the majority of affected areas across Colombo and Gampaha districts following quality testing of water samples from the Kelani Ganga intakes, according to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB). The testing process was carried out with assistance from the tri-forces after concerns emerged about water quality at the intakes that feed the Ambatale and Kelani Right Bank water treatment plants.
The temporary suspension of water distribution had been implemented across several areas in both districts on advice from the Disaster Management Centre after an emergency situation raised questions about the integrity of water sourced from the Kelani Ganga. The NWSDB said the testing process has now been completed, allowing restoration of supply in most localities.
However, the restoration process remains incomplete in certain areas. According to the NWSDB, residents in Battaramulla, Kotte, and Pamankada may continue to experience delays in the return of regular water supply. The board did not specify a timeline for when full restoration would be achieved in these remaining affected areas.
