Weather forecast for Friday (10):

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Mullaitivu, Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 pm. Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills, the North-central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Monaragala, Puttalam, Hambantota, Trincomalee and Mannar districts.

Weather forecast for sea areas:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Galle via Colombo. Winds will be south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island may be fairly rough at times. The wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thunderstorms.

Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara, Monaragala and Hambantota districts during the daytime. Amber alerts have been issued to 08 districts, while the public is advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun where possible and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
