Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has warned of hazardous sea conditions and powerful winds across multiple coastal regions, advising maritime communities to exercise caution.

The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level weather advisory for several coastal areas of Sri Lanka, effective until 11 a.m. on Thursday. The alert was released by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre on Wednesday morning and covers extensive stretches of the island's coastline.

The advisory applies to sea areas spanning from Pottuvil to Hambantota on the southern coast, as well as the northwestern and northern regions from Kalpitiya to Mullaitivu, including waters via Mannar and Kankasanthurai. According to the meteorological department, conditions in these zones are expected to deteriorate, with rough seas anticipated at various times throughout the warning period.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour in gusty conditions across the affected areas. The department has specifically advised naval personnel and fishing communities to maintain heightened vigilance during this period and to closely monitor subsequent forecasts and official advisories to ensure their safety at sea.
