Wildlife officials have treated a female elephant shot in both front legs near Hurulu Wewa tank bund, while her devoted calf remained by her side throughout the procedure.
A female wild elephant has received medical attention for gunshot wounds sustained to both of her front legs in an area near the Hurulu Wewa tank bund. The Department of Wildlife Conservation confirmed that veterinarians from the Pandulagama Wildlife Veterinary Unit conducted the treatment on Friday following reports from wildlife officers stationed at the Moragoda Beat Office.
During the procedure, the injured elephant's calf demonstrated unwillingness to separate from its mother, prompting wildlife officials to take additional measures. To facilitate medical treatment, veterinarians tranquillised the young calf and secured it safely to a nearby tree, allowing medical staff to proceed with attending to the injured mother.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that the wounded elephant will receive continued medical care in the days ahead as part of her recovery plan.
