The Wickramarachchi Institute of Science & Technology celebrated the graduation of more than 40 students with hearing and speech impairments who completed dual industry-recognised qualifications in optical technology.
The Wickramarachchi Institute of Science & Technology (WIST) held a graduation ceremony for over 40 students with hearing and speech impairments who completed the Certificate Course in Optical Technician. The programme was jointly developed by WIST, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Graduates received both the WIST certificate and the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Optician (Ophthalmic), accredited by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC).
The dual qualifications equip graduates with technical competencies and practical skills needed to work in Sri Lanka's optical healthcare sector. Dr. Mihira Wickramarachchi, Chairman of WIST, stated that the graduation demonstrated the institute's commitment to accessible education for all individuals. He emphasised that the achievement reflected not only academic success but also the resilience and determination of the graduates. According to Dr. Wickramarachchi, partnerships between educational institutions, industry, and international organisations are crucial for creating sustainable employment opportunities for persons with disabilities while meeting the country's demand for skilled professionals.
J.M. Wickramarachchi & Co. (JMW) provided scholarships to all programme participants to reduce financial barriers. Representatives from the partner organisations highlighted the initiative as a model for how academic institutions, industry, and international development bodies can collaborate to build a more inclusive workforce. The ceremony brought together representatives from WIST, AHK Sri Lanka, GIZ GmbH, and other stakeholders to recognise the graduates' achievements.
