The organization has expanded its educational initiatives beyond Colombo, conducting training sessions in Trincomalee aimed at equipping young people with technical and professional skills for the technology sector.
Women in Tech Sri Lanka has launched an expansion of its information technology education and career development programmes to Trincomalee, marking an effort to extend professional opportunities beyond the capital. Sanali Kaushalya, Country Director of the organization, emphasized the importance of decentralizing access to technology education, stating that empowerment initiatives should reach young people across the country rather than remaining concentrated in urban centers.
The initiative included two separate training sessions held in the eastern city. One was conducted with final-year students from the Department of Computer Science and Department of Physical Science at Eastern University Sri Lanka's Trincomalee Campus, working through the Faculty Career Guidance Cell. A second session took place at ESOFT Metro Campus Trincomalee. Both programmes addressed emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, innovation, leadership development and career pathways in the evolving technology industry.
Kaushalya highlighted that a university degree represents only an initial step in building a technology career, with graduates needing to develop complementary skills including communication, adaptability, creativity, problem-solving and professional networking to remain competitive. The organization identified significant talent and ambition among young people outside Colombo while noting barriers to their advancement, including limited access to industry mentorship, professional networks and contemporary knowledge.
Women in Tech Sri Lanka stated that expanding technology education access and building professional networks outside major urban areas could help create a more geographically inclusive and diverse technology ecosystem in the country.
