Swedish-founded Heart Aerospace successfully flew its 30-seat electric plane, the X1, for 27 minutes at an airport in New York, marking a milestone for commercial-scale electric aviation.
Heart Aerospace, a Sweden-founded company now based in the United States, achieved a significant milestone in aviation history when its battery-electric aircraft completed its inaugural test flight on Wednesday. The X1, a 30-seat plane, took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York and remained airborne for 27 minutes powered entirely by battery technology.
The aircraft, weighing approximately 25,000 pounds with a 10-foot wingspan, climbed to an altitude of 1,100 feet during the test. The single-pilot flight operated without any passengers on board, focusing on validating the aircraft's electrical systems and performance capabilities.
According to Anders Forslund, founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, the flight demonstrated the viability of electric propulsion at a commercial aviation scale. Notably, the entire test flight consumed electricity valued at just £3.70 (approximately USD 4.65), highlighting the potential cost efficiency of battery-powered aircraft compared to conventional fuel-based alternatives.
The successful test represents an important step in the development of sustainable aviation technology, as the aviation industry seeks alternatives to reduce its carbon footprint. Heart Aerospace's achievement suggests that battery-electric planes could eventually serve regional routes with 30 or more passengers, though significant engineering and regulatory challenges remain before commercial operations begin.
