Jaffna. Special Workshop for District Communication and Media Studies Subject Teachers A one-day workshop for teachers responsible for school media clubs and teachers of Communication and Media Studies, jointly organized by the Jaffna District Secretariat and the Department of Government Information, was held today (12.06.2026) at 8.30 am at the laboratory of the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna. The Department of Government Information organized this workshop under the Provincial Program Plan - 2026 to clarify the subject teachers with the aim of creating a quality media-literate school community. Teachers teaching Communication and Media Studies in schools in the Jaffna district participated in this workshop. The Additional Government Agent of the Jaffna District, Mr. K. Sivakaran, participated in the opening ceremony and made the opening remarks, saying that the development of the media sector and its activities in today's era has a huge impact on all sectors, and the development of Al technology is currently influencing all sectors. In this situation, media literacy is essential. He said that teachers should provide proper clarification to students in this regard, and on this basis, media clubs are being established and operated in schools. The activities of a media should not only increase its income, but also consider social benefits in every aspect of its activities, and although the development of the media sector is welcome, some of its activities are causing social degradation, he said that social media should act responsibly in this regard, and that school students should be made aware of whether the news published through the media is true or whether it has been written using AI technology to contradict the truth. The event continued with a special speech by the Director General of the Government Information Department, H.S.K.J. Bandara, shared through video. Subsequently, Professor S. Raghuram of the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna, delivered a lecture on the concepts of modern media trends, media culture and the current importance of media studies and technological knowledge. The Head of the Department of Media Studies, Mrs. Poonguzhali Srisankeerthanan, gave a presentation on media regulation, the need for media regulation and social media literacy. Mr. S.A.M. Pawas, Information Officer of the Government Information Department, spoke on strategic planning for media institutions and the role of media institutions in the personality development of students. Subsequently, Mr. T. Sivanesan, Audio Visual Technology Officer of the Department of Media Studies, gave a practical presentation on audio-visual display and art gallery work, and Mobile Journalism (MOJO), which is gaining importance in today's times. Lecturers in the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna, District Media Division officers and Communication and Media Studies subject teachers participated in this workshop.
