Police arrested a approximately 20-year-old driver after intercepting one of four vehicles observed being driven unsafely near Independence Square in Colombo on August 29. Three other cars fled the scene.

Law enforcement authorities apprehended a young driver in connection with a reckless driving incident that occurred near Independence Square in Colombo on Friday afternoon. According to police reports, officers from Cinnamon Gardens Police Station observed a group of four vehicles being operated in an unsafe manner in the area.

When police attempted to intercept the vehicles, three of the four cars managed to escape the vicinity. Officers successfully stopped one vehicle and took its driver, believed to be around 20 years old, into custody. The arrested individual has been referred for examination by a Judicial Medical Officer to determine whether substance use was a contributing factor to the incident.

Authorities have also ordered that the seized vehicle undergo inspection by a motor vehicle examiner. The examination will establish whether the car qualifies as a high-powered vehicle and will include additional technical assessments. Cinnamon Gardens Police have initiated a wider investigation to track down and identify the three vehicles that fled the scene.

The incident comes as authorities continue efforts to curb reckless driving and street racing activities in the capital city.
