A 29-year-old from Kengalla has been arrested after allegedly offering Rs. 500,000 to police officers to secure the release of a suspected drug trafficker held at Teldeniya Police Station.
Police have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of attempting to bribe officers at the Teldeniya Police Station with Rs. 500,000 to obtain the release of a detained drug trafficking suspect. The bribery attempt emerged during investigations into a case where an individual was taken into custody on July 31 with approximately 2.4 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine in their possession. That suspect was subsequently produced before the Teldeniya Magistrate's Court, which ordered their detention for further investigation.
During the course of investigating the initial drug case, authorities identified a second individual allegedly involved in trafficking operations in the Kengalla area of Kandy. This suspect was found with approximately 10.8 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine. According to police, this individual then attempted to interfere with court proceedings by offering the bribe to the Officer-in-Charge of the Teldeniya Police Station.
Police conducted a special operation and apprehended the suspect while he was allegedly in the process of delivering the cash. Officers recovered Rs. 500,000 in hundred Rs. 5,000 notes from the suspect's possession. The arrested individual, a resident of Kengalla, will face investigation under provisions of the Bribery Act. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has been notified to determine further legal proceedings in the matter.
