The Mahara Prison has transferred over 100 inmates to facilities across the country following disturbances at the facility. Authorities have stated that operations are being restored and family visits will resume after repairs.
A total of 104 inmates have been relocated from Mahara Prison to multiple facilities nationwide following unrest at the institution, according to Prison Commissioner (Operations) A.C. Gajanayake. The transferred prisoners have been distributed among prisons in Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Batticaloa, and Polonnaruwa.
The Prison Department confirmed that disturbances erupted at Mahara Prison on the afternoon of December 1st but were contained through coordinated efforts involving prison staff, Sri Lanka Police, the Police Special Task Force, and military units. A list identifying the transferred inmates has been made available at a checkpoint near the prison entrance.
Family visits to the facility will be permitted to resume following Tuesday, once ongoing repair work is completed. Prison authorities have indicated they are taking steps to return the institution to normal operations following the incident.
