The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary was taken into custody by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau following a summons to answer questions about remarks he made regarding the Inspector General of Police.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam was arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau on Monday morning after appearing for questioning at their offices in Colombo. The arrest followed a formal summons issued by investigators who sought his statement regarding comments attributed to him about the Inspector General of Police.

The investigation centres on remarks Kariyawasam made during a media briefing at SLPP headquarters on August 3. According to reports, he referenced the fates of previous Inspectors General of Police and made statements urging the current Police Chief to prioritize serving the state and public rather than the government. Specifically, he stated: "We do not want him to go down in history as the 37th Inspector General of Police who died after being beaten on the roadside by members of the public."

Kariyawasam's comments drew criticism from government figures, with the remarks being interpreted by some as referencing an alleged assassination attempt. Kariyawasam had previously stated that his comments had been misinterpreted. According to Ada Derana, the Central Crime Investigation Bureau initiated the investigation on the instructions of the IGP in relation to Kariyawasam's statement concerning the Police Chief.
