The dengue epidemic sweeping Sri Lanka has resulted in 69 deaths and 92,854 confirmed cases throughout 2026, the National Dengue Control Unit reported. The case fatality rate stands at 0.07%, reflecting the scale of the outbreak's impact on public health systems across the country.

The outbreak has shown distinct seasonal patterns, with cases peaking during the monsoon months. July emerged as the worst-affected month with nearly 30,000 cases, while June recorded over 21,000 cases. August saw a decline to 7,516 cases, though transmission remained elevated. Earlier in the year, monthly cases ranged between 5,000 and 8,500 infections from January through May.

Geographic distribution of cases reveals significant regional variation. The Gampaha District has borne the heaviest burden, accounting for approximately one-fifth of all cases with 19,778 infections. The Colombo District follows closely with 18,433 cases, representing nearly 20% of the national total. Kandy District reported 6,695 cases. Health authorities have identified 96 high-risk Medical Officer of Health areas across the country as they intensify dengue control operations.
