Authorities in Nuwara Eliya have temporarily suspended 28 vehicles from operation after finding them unfit for road use during a joint inspection in the Talawakelle area.

A combined team of traffic officers from the Nuwara Eliya Police Division and motor vehicle inspectors conducted a spot check in Talawakelle, inspecting 40 vehicles of various types including buses, cars, motorcycles, vans, lorries, and three-wheelers. According to Nuwara Eliya District Chief Motor Vehicle Inspector Jaliya Bandara, 28 of these vehicles were found to have defects that made them unsuitable for operation on public roads.

The suspended vehicles include four private buses and 15 three-wheelers. In addition to being removed from service, the revenue licences of all 28 vehicles were confiscated by authorities. Bandara stated that operators will need to repair the identified defects and undergo reinspection before their vehicles can return to the road.

The inspection initiative forms part of a broader road safety campaign being carried out across the Nuwara Eliya District. Officials indicated that similar vehicle checks are being conducted at multiple locations to reduce traffic accidents and improve overall road safety in the region. The operation underscores ongoing efforts by transport authorities to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles remain in service.
