The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an amber advisory for multiple coastal regions, warning of strong winds and elevated sea conditions expected to persist through Thursday morning.
Authorities have activated an amber-level weather advisory covering several coastal stretches of Sri Lanka, effective from Wednesday morning through Thursday. The alert was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 10:30 a.m. and will remain in place until the same time the following day.
The warning encompasses two primary sea regions: the waters stretching from Kankesanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar, and the area between Matara and Pottuvil via Hambantota. These zones are anticipated to experience rough conditions at intervals, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour.
Wave heights are expected to be particularly significant in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Matara, where waves may reach heights of 2.5 to 3 meters. Coastal communities in proximity to these affected regions have been cautioned about potential seawater inundation.
The warning specifically targets naval personnel and fishing communities, advising heightened caution during the advisory period. Residents and maritime workers in the identified coastal areas are encouraged to monitor updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the expected adverse weather conditions.
