Japan has provided grant assistance to support 15 Sri Lankan public officials in pursuing Master's degrees at Japanese universities starting in 2027, as part of its ongoing Human Resource Development Scholarship initiative.

The Japanese Government has committed JPY 282 million, equivalent to approximately Rs. 591 million, to fund advanced education for Sri Lankan public sector officials through its Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) project. Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata and Sri Lankan Treasury Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma formalized the agreement in Colombo yesterday through the exchange of official notes.

The scholarship will enable 15 public sector officials to pursue two-year Master's degree programs at Japanese universities beginning in 2027. The programs cover specialized areas including public policy, international relations and development, macroeconomics, public finance and investment management, and industry development policy and investment promotion. The initiative aims to equip young administrative officers with advanced knowledge and skills necessary for future leadership responsibilities.

Since launching the JDS project in Sri Lanka in 2010, the Japanese Government has supported a total of 254 public sector officials through similar educational opportunities. According to the Japanese Embassy, the program is designed to strengthen both individual capabilities and institutional capacity within Sri Lanka's public sector, thereby supporting the country's broader development objectives.

The Embassy emphasized that participants are expected to leverage their academic experience to foster deeper professional and personal connections between Sri Lanka and Japan, potentially strengthening bilateral relations beyond their immediate career contributions.
