All passengers aboard a boat travelling between Jaffna and Delft Island were rescued after the vessel encountered difficulties near Nainativu on Sunday, with authorities now investigating safety compliance.
A boat carrying ten passengers met with an accident near Nainatiyu (Nagadeepa) while travelling from Kurikattuwan Jetty in Jaffna towards Delft Island on Sunday. According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the vessel was carrying eight men and two women at the time of the incident.
Following notification of the accident, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar coordinated with the Sri Lanka Navy to initiate a rescue operation. All ten passengers were successfully rescued with assistance from local residents of Nainativu and Delft. The rescued individuals were then transported to Nainativu Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The ministry stated that officials have been instructed to examine whether passengers were provided with adequate life jackets and whether required safety protocols were properly observed. Minister Chandrasekar has directed officials to strengthen enforcement of maritime passenger safety procedures and implement preventive measures to avoid future occurrences of such incidents.
