Government officials have announced an initiative to transform Elephant Rock in Arugam Bay into a fully operational tourist destination, aiming to extend tourism activities across the Eastern Province throughout the entire year.
The Ministry of Tourism has outlined plans to develop Elephant Rock in Arugam Bay as a comprehensive tourism site, moving beyond the region's current reliance on seasonal surfing activities. Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, accompanied by Deputy Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe and other government officials, visited the location to assess development possibilities and local conditions.
According to Herath, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to activate the Eastern coastline as a consistent tourism destination across all seasons. The government aims to balance attracting international hotel operators with supporting local entrepreneurs and rural investors in the area. Infrastructure development has been identified as a priority, with plans to enhance roads, electricity supply, water systems, and sanitation facilities.
During the site visit, officials acknowledged existing challenges faced by local residents who have contributed to tourism development despite lacking adequate basic services. Herath committed to accelerated government action to address these infrastructure gaps, ensuring that communities benefit from tourism expansion in the region. The proposed development reflects government efforts to diversify Sri Lanka's tourism offerings beyond traditional seasonal markets and distribute economic benefits across the Eastern Province.
