Ukraine's capital faced a fresh barrage of Russian missiles and drones overnight, resulting in at least 13 deaths and widespread damage. President Zelensky has renewed calls for Western allies to supply additional air defence interceptors, citing critical shortages as the primary cause of casualties.
A large-scale Russian assault on Kyiv left at least 13 people dead and 40 injured, according to Ukraine's prime minister, with residential buildings, warehouses, schools, and a children's hospital sustaining damage across the city. The State Emergency Service confirmed that strikes began around midnight, with approximately 20 Russian missiles impacting the capital and cutting electricity to thousands of residents. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia deployed 168 drones and 44 missiles in the operation, with air defences successfully intercepting 146 drones and 39 cruise missiles. However, the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that none of the ballistic missiles used in the overnight attack were stopped.
President Volodymyr Zelensky directly linked the casualties to Ukraine's shortage of air defence systems, specifically Patriot interceptor missiles supplied by Western allies. He stated that the lack of anti-ballistic capabilities prevents Russia from considering peace negotiations, and emphasized that each additional interceptor could save lives. Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko told the BBC that cities remain "absolutely unprotected" from ballistic attacks without these systems. The US, which has been the primary supplier of Patriot interceptors, has depleted much of its stockpile supporting operations in the Middle East, resulting in reduced supplies to Ukraine.
The attack prompted Ukraine to declare a national day of mourning. Casualties were also reported in surrounding regions, with one killed in Brovary and Boryspil districts and additional deaths in Donetsk Oblast. In response, Russia's defence ministry reported shooting down 726 Ukrainian drones launched at various regions. Neighbouring countries also experienced incidents, with a drone crossing into Romanian territory and Poland conducting "defensive air operations" to protect its airspace.
