India marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with celebrations held throughout Sri Lanka, featuring flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and various commemorative events organised by Indian diplomatic missions.

India's Independence Day was observed with ceremonial events and cultural programmes across multiple locations in Sri Lanka on August 15, 2026. The primary celebration took place at India House in Colombo, where High Commissioner Santosh Jha hoisted the national flag and received a Guard of Honour. The High Commissioner also shared excerpts from an address delivered by India's President on the occasion. Indian diplomatic missions participated in the Suryapath Tiranga initiative, a global relay in which the Indian flag was hoisted sequentially across time zones, with Sri Lanka continuing the relay between missions in Kathmandu and Male.

The Colombo celebrations incorporated cultural performances from multiple sources, including musical performances by the Sri Lanka Navy Band and patriotic songs presented by students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre. High Commission officials also paid respects at the Indian Peace Keeping Force Memorial, honouring Indian soldiers who served in Sri Lanka. Beyond the main event, the Assistant High Commission in Kandy and Consulate Generals in Jaffna and Hambantota organised their own observances.

The High Commission coordinated several artistic and educational activities, including Madhubani and Warli art workshops, an India-Sri Lanka children's painting competition, and photography contests. A special edition of the "Bharat ko Janiye" quiz drew record participation from Sri Lankans, demonstrating what organisers described as strong people-to-people connections. The celebrations also commemorated the 150th anniversary of India's national song, Vande Mataram, with performances by Indian and Sri Lankan musicians.

Evening festivities included a concert called "Swar Sangam," featuring Indian classical musician Rajhesh Vaidhya alongside acclaimed Sri Lankan singer Yohani. Additionally, Havelock City Mall hosted "India Fest 2026," a two-day festival showcasing Indian fashion, handicrafts, cuisine, and cultural activities.
