The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has announced plans to invite investor proposals for extracting natural gas from the Mannar Basin, following scientific confirmation of gas reserves in the region.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has initiated a process to identify suitable investors for developing natural gas resources discovered in the Mannar Basin. According to CPC Managing Director Dr. Mayura Neththikumara, the invitation for proposals is expected to commence this month, with a five-month window allocated for interested parties to submit applications.
The presence of natural gas deposits in the Mannar Basin has been scientifically confirmed by the Sri Lanka Petroleum Development Authority, providing the foundation for the extraction and utilization project. The CPC indicated that the investor selection process will proceed following approval from the Procurement Committee, suggesting a structured and regulated approach to awarding exploration and extraction rights.
This development marks a significant step in Sri Lanka's efforts to tap into its offshore energy resources. The discovery could potentially contribute to the country's energy security and provide additional government revenue through licensing and royalty arrangements. The five-month application period will allow international and local investors adequate time to evaluate the opportunity and prepare their proposals for consideration.
