Heavy rainfall has caused the Dickoya stream to overflow in the Hatton area, submerging multiple houses along its banks for the second time in over a decade. A tourist hotel in a nearby region has also been affected by river flooding.
The Dickoya stream, which feeds into the Castlereigh Reservoir, overflowed on March 3rd following intense rainfall, inundating numerous residential properties situated on both sides of the waterway in the Hatton area. Residents affected by the flooding reported that their homes have been submerged, marking a recurrence of a similar disaster that struck the region in 2013.
Local communities expressed concern about the repeated nature of these flooding events, noting that the stream's overflow has once again left families displaced and properties damaged. The incident highlights ongoing vulnerability in the area to water overflow during periods of heavy rain.
Beyond the Hatton region, flooding also impacted tourism infrastructure in the surrounding districts. A hotel catering to tourists in the Nawalapitiya area sustained damage as the Mahaweli River, one of Sri Lanka's major waterways, similarly exceeded its banks due to the rainfall.
