A Sri Lankan Navy vessel sank off the coast of Angulana on August 15, with 11 personnel rescued but one officer still missing. Authorities are investigating whether contact with a submerged wreck may have caused the incident.
Search and rescue operations for a missing Sri Lanka Navy officer extended into a fourth day as naval and air forces maintained an intensive operation off Angulana following a maritime incident last week. The Navy's Fast Attack Craft P 4447 encountered an emergency on August 15 around 11:40 a.m. while returning from a routine patrol mission in the area.
Eleven naval personnel were successfully rescued following the incident, with assistance provided by Angulana Police and members of the local fishing community. The rescued sailors are receiving medical care and remain in stable condition, according to naval authorities. Navy divers successfully salvaged the distressed vessel in the early hours of August 16, though rough sea conditions have complicated subsequent towing operations.
Investigators are examining multiple factors that may have contributed to the sinking. According to preliminary accounts from rescued personnel obtained by officials, the vessel may have made contact with a submerged wreck in the area prior to the emergency, though authorities emphasised this remains one of several aspects under examination. A panel of experts has been tasked with conducting a preliminary inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the accident.
The incident prompted a coordinated multi-agency response involving the Sri Lanka Navy, Air Force, and local authorities. Recovery efforts remain ongoing despite challenging maritime conditions in the region.
