The Public Security Ministry has initiated a probe into remarks made by SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam about Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya, with the minister characterizing the statements as irresponsible.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala announced that an investigation has been ordered following comments made by SLPP General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam regarding the current Inspector General of Police. At a media briefing, Wijepala stated that the government would treat the matter seriously and had directed authorities to conduct an immediate inquiry.
Kariyawasam had previously called on the IGP to prioritize serving the state and its citizens rather than the government. He also expressed concern that the current police chief should not become remembered as an "IGP beaten to death by people on the street," according to reports from the briefing.
Wijepala characterized Kariyawasam's statements as irresponsible and suggested they reflected the political orientation of a movement that had historically compromised public interests for political gain. The minister defended the IGP's current performance, asserting that he is fulfilling his responsibilities effectively.
The minister attributed the critical remarks to individuals facing anxiety due to ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption, bribery, and improper use of public assets. Wijepala indicated that the government would take appropriate action following the completion of the investigation into Kariyawasam's comments.
