Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has criticized the government's ability to manage the country, citing failures in prison administration, debt payments, and cybersecurity as evidence of broader governance problems.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa challenged the government's competency to lead the nation, drawing connections between its handling of the prison system and broader governance failures. Speaking at a public gathering in Maligakanda, Borella, Premadasa questioned how a government unable to manage prisons could effectively serve the country's 22 million citizens and address their welfare needs.

Premadasa pointed to recent incidents as evidence of administrative shortcomings. He alleged that the government had mishandled a foreign debt instalment payment, resulting in USD 2.5 million being lost to hackers. The Opposition Leader also referenced a no-confidence motion against the Minister of Justice and Prisons that the government had voted down during the previous parliamentary session, only for unrest to erupt at Mahara Prison days later.

Criticizing the administration's campaign promises, Premadasa claimed that despite pledging expert-led governance, the government had failed to manage key institutional responsibilities. He asserted that a government unable to control a prison could not rebuild the nation and accused the present administration of creating additional difficulties rather than solving existing problems.

Additionally, Premadasa raised concerns about economic hardship affecting significant portions of the population. According to the Opposition Leader, between 30 to 40 percent of the country's population currently faces poverty, with difficulties reported across urban, rural, and estate communities.
