Heavy rainfall has triggered multiple earth slips along the Hatton-Colombo main road near Diyagala, bringing vehicular traffic to a complete halt and stranding numerous vehicles.
The Hatton-Colombo main road has been rendered impassable following a series of earth slips in the Diyagala area during periods of heavy rainfall. According to police, debris including earth mounds and boulders have accumulated across the roadway, halting traffic flow in both directions.
The blockage has affected all traffic moving between Hatton and surrounding towns including Ginigathena, Nawalapitiya, and Kandy, with vehicles unable to proceed toward or away from Colombo. The obstruction has resulted in substantial traffic congestion, with long queues of stranded vehicles building up on either side of the road and causing considerable hardship to passengers.
Clearance efforts are underway, with the Road Development Authority coordinating with local residents to remove the fallen debris and reopen the route. However, the ongoing adverse weather conditions are hampering recovery operations. Police have advised motorists to avoid the affected area and utilise alternative routes where feasible until the road is cleared and declared safe for travel.
