Hydroelectric power generation in Sri Lanka faces a manageable near-term outlook, with the National System Operator Company reporting that reservoirs dedicated to hydropower are currently filled to approximately 67% capacity. According to the company, existing water volumes should prove sufficient to meet electricity generation demands through October, contingent on favorable conditions.
Recent rainfall in the upper catchment areas feeding hydroelectric facilities has helped maintain these levels. However, the National System Operator Company indicated that future hydropower generation decisions will depend significantly on weather patterns and precipitation trends in the coming months.
Beyond the hydropower sector, the broader water management picture presents a more constrained scenario. The Department of Irrigation reported that major reservoirs across the island are currently operating at approximately 50% capacity. The situation is more acute for reservoirs under the department's direct management, where water storage capacity has declined to 35%, according to H.M.P.S.D. Herath, director of the department's Water Management Unit.
The disparity between hydropower reservoir levels and general island-wide reservoir capacity suggests that while electricity generation infrastructure maintains adequate reserves, the overall water security situation requires close monitoring, particularly as the country approaches the latter months of the year.
