Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has publicly recommended that Sri Lanka consider including left-handed batter Sahan Arachchige in their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against India, citing his ability to counter the Indian spin attack.

Ahead of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India scheduled to commence in Galle on August 15, former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown his weight behind the inclusion of Sahan Arachchige in the home team's playing XI. Ashwin, commenting during a preview of the Test series, stated that he would advocate for Arachchige's selection if given a say in Sri Lankan cricket matters.

Ashwin's recommendation centres on Arachchige's ability to handle spin bowling, particularly against India's established spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. According to Ashwin, Sri Lanka would benefit from fielding a quality left-handed batter capable of negating the threat posed by the Indian spin attack. Ashwin drew on his personal observation of Arachchige's performance during A team cricket to support his endorsement, noting the player's positive batting approach.

Ashwin further suggested a tactical adjustment to Sri Lanka's squad composition. He proposed that the home team could utilise Dinesh Chandimal as wicketkeeper, potentially freeing up a spot in the XI for an additional quality left-handed batter like Arachchige. While acknowledging that Arachchige can also contribute with off-spin bowling, Ashwin emphasised that the player's batting prowess was the primary factor making him a strategically sound choice against the visiting Indian side.
